Engine starting system with energy management subsystem

Abstract: A system for starting an internal combustion engine includes an electrical energy storage device 10, a cranking motor 12 connected with the storage device, and energy management means including a controller 26 for estimating the energy delivery capability of the storage device as a function of at least one variable having a value determined during a previous episode of engine operation.
