Control system for internal combustion engines

Abstract: A control system for controlling operation of an internal combustion engine detects a selected one of two exhaust modes: a first exhaust mode in which exhaust gases are guided through a first catalytic converter upstream of a second catalytic converter, and a second exhaust mode in which exhaust gases are guided through a bypass passage bypassing the first catalytic converter. A control mode is determined according to the selected one of the two exhaust modes, in which the operation of the engine is to be controlled by the control system.
