Abstract: Method for dyeing keratinous fibres, in particular human keratinous fibres such as hair, characterized in that a composition containing, in a medium appropriate for dyeing: at least the coupler 4-hydroxyindole, as well as the salts of this compound; at least one oxidation dye precursor; and at least one oxidising agent; is applied to said fibres, the pH of the composition applied to the fibres being less than 7.
