Abstract: Disclosed is a 4-amino-2-hydroxy-5-substituted-acylanilide compound having the structural formula I: ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or an alkyl group, and Y is a substituent group linked to the rest of the compound by a hetero atom. Also disclosed is a method of using the compound to prepare an intermediate in a simplified process for making a cyan dye-forming coupler.
